The second quarterly Recreation Paddler Recognition Award goes to Loretta Moy.
Loretta has, for a number of years, been the driving force behind the establishment and setting up of Kayak Share Club (KSC) at Hayes Street Beach in Neutral Bay, and growing it to a current membership of over 150. The format of the club, where a small fleet of 12 kayaks are lent by their owners, maintained by the club and used by all members, has allowed over the last four years over 200 people to get out paddling. It has also fostered new social groups of inner city residents who have connected through the club, as well as providing the most wonderful Covid lockdown exercise to many who were otherwise confined to the very small LGA of North Sydney.
Late last year, a second KSC was started up at Pearl Bay, next to Spit Bridge, after a year-long collaboration by several members working with Mosman Council. This will open up the relatively quiet and very different paddling opportunities of Middle Harbour to club members.
PaddleNSW keenly recognises this form of club as a great step forward in the way sports clubs can operate. Twofold, we applaud the reduction of unused, water-filled kayaks littering the harbour foreshore. This issue has been quite political at local and state level. Through Loretta and Kayak Share Club, PaddleNSW is again demonstrating responsible and environmentally-sustainable practices on the water and indeed storage of vessels off the water.
