The Mullets

The Mullets are a school of water-based eco warriors within the River Canoe Club, Sydney. We formed due to our deep concern about the health and wellbeing of the Cooks River, Sydney. Each month, usually on a weekend, we meet at the River Canoe Club. We partner up, put on lifejackets, grab rubbish bags and collectors, then launch a mighty fleet of kayaks and canoes onto our beautiful river to collect rubbish that’s floating and stuck in the mangroves.

At the end of the trip we sort and photograph the rubbish. We send these photos to our local MP’s to highlight the high levels of single use plastics and household waste going to the river. The Cooks River Alliance and Canterbury Bankstown Council generously collect and dispose of the rubbish.

Becoming a Mullet is a lot of fun and a very positive experience.  Cleaning the Cooks River is a proactive step in the fight against climate change. You’ll feel good because you’re improving the health and wellbeing of our beautiful river, plus there’s the joy in being out on the water with other Mullets, not to mention the exercise.

Please come along if you like to make a positive contribution to the planet and/or you love the Cooks River. We’re a very friendly and diverse group.  Everyone is welcome, including those with little or no kayaking experience.

To participate you’ll need to join the River Canoe Club. The Club offers a special one-month trial membership for just $10. If you enjoy being a Mullet and decide to join then you’ll need to sign up for an annual membership with the River Canoe Club and pay $5 for kayak hire each trip. Club membership includes insurance and covers boat maintenance and clubhouse up-keep. The club offers a lot of great activities, including training and trips away.
