Sprint Series Regatta 7th Nov

About 70 paddlers turned up to Penrith on Sunday for our first regatta of the season, after a few Covid cancellations. We had some older, experienced paddlers, plenty of first timers and our young guns in the 18’s and 16’s age groups. clubs represented were Avoca kayak Club, Illawarra Canoe Club, Manly Warringah Kayak Club, Sydney Northern Beaches Kayak Club and Windsor Canoe Club as well as a number of NSWIS and individual athletes . Water conditions were perfect and despite the threat of a storm, it managed to hold off till the end of the regatta.

Athletes raced in their male and female age groups as well as a mixed novice heat over 1000, 500 and 200m.  We saw some great performances from young athletes who have trained hard all winter waiting for their first opportunity to race since Nationals in May. The future of sprint kayaking in NSW is looking good.

Sprint Series 2 is coming up in 2 weeks on Sat, 20th Nov hosted by Manly Warringah Kayak Club, and a pre Christmas event at SIRC on Sunday, 19th Dec.  State Championships are Sat, Sun, 22/23rd Jan also at SIRC.

State teams will be selected at State in 16, 18, 21s and 23s age groups.

The Sprint Committee is looking for some new members, having recently lost a few.  We especially need someone who has some basic IT skills who can run an excel spreadsheet, and some people who are just willing to get stuck in and help with regatta organisation. It would be great to have a couple of representatives from each Sprint club.  No paddling experience necessary.  It’s not onerous, it’s a great committee to be part of and we are focused on growing the sport of Sprint Kayaking. Please get in touch at sprint@paddlensw.org.au. We have a big season ahead, and would love to have you on board soon.
