Paddling in 2021 and beyond…

Hello Members and paddling enthusiasts,

The uncertainty and frustration of 2020 is behind us, and thankfully we are fully into paddling mode in 2021. A magnificent PNSW Marathon Series opener was held in Wagga last weekend, with great appreciation to host club WBCC. That Series continues at Windsor next month, together with our PNSW Harbour Series opener at Pittwater.

It is wonderful to see slalom and whitewater events also featuring on the calendar, and of course the Sydney Canoe Polo competition at Northbridge Baths each Tuesday evening is going from strength to strength.

Away from competition, PaddleNSW is leading the way with activities for Clean Up Australia Day. Full credit to Bron Powell, her PNSW Environment Team and all the clubs that are supporting the initiative.

Although events and activities are returning full-throttle, please be mindful that society is still pandemic-conscious. The clubs and Paddlesports are still preparing and conducting events with COVID Safety Plans applicable. If you have flu-like symptoms – don’t attend. Continue personal hygiene practices for yourself and those around you. And please be respectful to organisers and volunteers who are doing their best to conduct a safe event.

I finish this article with uplifting news that Australia is the front-runner to host the Olympic Games in 2032. Get your kids (or grand-kids) onto the water this year, because in 11 years time they could be standing on the local podium with a ribbon around their neck.

Safe and enjoyable paddling.
