Celebrating Paddling Volunteers: Chris Johnson

May 16th – 22nd is National Volunteer Week, and PaddleNSW is excited to celebrate a range of volunteers from across our paddling community. These are the people that go above and beyond, yet often behind the scenes, to ensure the smooth running of events, the beauty of our waterways and the continuity of our clubs. If there’s a volunteer you’d like to see featured, email admin@paddlensw.org.au.

“Many paddlers are quick to identify hazards, fewer take the plunge and volunteer to remove them,” writes LCRK president John Duffy.

“Chris Johnson from Lane Cove does an enormous amount of work for the club clearing hazards from the river after major storm events.  This mainly involves taking a cold, muddy and smelly swim to trim dead trees and sharp branches that have fallen from the banks into the paddling line. These photos are of Chris going “below and beyond” to give a new hazard a haircut on the Anzac Day long weekend – a number of marathon paddlers snagged this underwater branch at our recent marathon and we are pleased to see it gone.”

The tree, the swim and the success, Chris Johnson from Lane Cove goes “below and beyond” to keep the river free from hazards!
